Maurice A. Auerbach relies on rich history for success

auerpacklogo It takes hard work, dedication and experience to be a success in the produce industry today — especially at a time when the entire industry is facing challenges brought on by the pandemic — which is why Maurice A. Auerbach continues to be a go-to source for many.

The Secaucus, NJ-based company remains the largest garlic and specialty produce distributor in the Northeast, though it didn’t come easily for the third-generation family-owned business.

The company began distributing garlic way back during World War II, and about 50 years ago, expanded its product line to feature a variety of produce sourced from around the world.

In 2020, packing products under the AuerPak brand name, the company specializes in garlic, shallots and other produce specialty items, including tropical and Asian produce. It is also a certified organic packer of garlic, ginger and shallots.

Bruce Klein, director of marketing for Maurice A. Auerbach, said more consumers are appreciating the health benefits of garlic and that has helped drive the category in recent years — even before the coronavirus made people think more about healthy eating.

“We expect to see demand continue and sales increasing in the months ahead,” he said. “Garlic is as popular as it’s ever been.”

Speaking of the pandemic, Maurice A. Auerbach has adjusted to the challenges brought on by the coronavirus.

“All our employees are practicing social distancing, we have added tables in the lunch room to keep the employees at a safe distance and have staggered lunch and break times,” Klein said.

The company has also added another associate to help sanitize the work spaces and the delivery vehicles.

Maurice A. Auerbach continues to use the resources at its disposal to stay successful and improve relationships with its customer base. To that end, Klein shared that the company constantly looks into new equipment upgrades and new ways of packing product to see what might be implemented in the future.

“We’re always looking at how to do things better than what we’re doing now,” he said.

Garlic continues to sell well throughout the pandemic and Klein noted he’s noticed a trend for consumers looking for organic items more than ever.

“A lot of that I feel is because many of the organic items are packaged to differentiate themselves from conventional and I think people feel safer buying packaged items,” he said. “It’s all about what the consumer is willing to do. But they also feel organic is healthier, so that’s another reason for that.”
