Fall is a big deal for Nardelli Lake View Farms

nardellilakeview The Nardelli family has been offering field-to-fork produce services for more than a century and Nardelli Bros. Inc. -Lake View Farms continues to be a force in the produce industry.

The company grows and ships the produce that it grows on its own large farms located in southern New Jersey, operating out of Cedarville.

It also offers cooling operations, packing and shipping and delivery and transportation services.

Bill Nardelli Jr., vice president of sales for Nardelli Lake View Farms, who is part of the fifth generation of the family working for the company, noted that COVID-19 continues to have an effect on everyone in the industry.

“We’ve seen really good support from our retailers,” he noted. “They’ve been really busy with people continuing to shop and we’ve had some limited restaurants open up.”

“I think as we get into the fall and some cooler temperatures in the Northeast and Midwest, more and more people will be eating at home, and we’re looking forward to that going into the season.”

The company has seen an increase in its retail business since the pandemic started, though naturally saw most of its foodservice business decrease.

“We have seen a lot of our foodservice partners make some changes in their business model to continue to move product, whether it be through direct home delivery or other creative things like that,” Nardelli said. “So, we have seen a little pick up in that segment.”

Fall is one of the most important times of year for the company and its gearing up for what it anticipates to be a busy few months ahead.

“One of our main seasons is coming up with Thanksgiving and leading into the Christmas holiday,” Nardelli said. “It’s a big part of the year for us in the fall. We have all of our leafy greens, cabbage, cilantro, dills, parsley and all the wet items straight through the holiday and the promotions are always really good with our retail partners.”

As of late August, crops were looking strong and even with some weather challenges because of Hurricane Isaias and heavy rains on some of the dry items, items for early September and throughout the fall weren’t impacted.

Nardelli Lake View Farms started tray-packing corn in 2020 and has also done more value-added packaging since COVID, as consumers have become more interested in packaged product and shying away from bulk.

“We’ve been trying to meet that demand as well as we can, with the tray-pack corn and bagged beans and things like that,” Nardelli said.

“We’re going to continue to invest in our value-added. We’ve added some new equipment and working with a lot of our packaging companies and bagging companies to try and come up with some new ways of packaging items in different sizes.”

New Jersey has always been a great location for the products the company grows, and being in close proximity to a lot of major cities has helped the company thrive.

“We have quite a long season here compared to some other areas,” Nardelli said. “We’ll start in April with a lot of our wet items and asparagus, and we’ll continue all the way through December with cabbages and our greens and leafy items. We have a wide range of items that gives us a lot of opportunities.”

Being involved with Jersey Fresh has also been a boon to the company.

“It’s such a great program and it really helps market our great, local products,” Nardelli said.

“A lot of our retailers will have signage in the store, photos of us or other local growers, and everyone does a great job in promoting Jersey and local growers and that’s truly what consumers want to see.”
