Duda Farm Fresh Foods sees growth in value-added tray pack corn

dudaduda Six generations of the Duda family have been working at Duda Farm Fresh Foods in Oviedo, FL—a legacy that began when Andrew Duda set his sights on the American Dream on just 40 acres of land. In 1953, it officially launched the Dandy brand, and today, the company supplies fresh fruit and vegetables to stores and food service clients around the country.

When it comes to springtime, Duda Farm Fresh Foods offers bulk sweet corn along with Tray Pack Sweet Corn, Ready Radishes, Radish Ministicks and Radish Coins.

“Duda Farm Fresh Foods has continued to see growth in value-added tray pack corn, especially during summer holidays like Memorial Day,” said Nichole Towell, senior director of marketing at Duda Farm Fresh Foods. “With warmer weather inviting more people outside, shoppers are looking for convenient and easy options to have on hand for their outdoor grilling parties. The tray pack corn comes pre-shucked and cut to reduce prep time for consumers.”

Of course, working alongside Mother Nature, there are always challenges that present themselves and the Duda family has worked hard through the years to cope with anything that’s come their way. This year is no different.

“Though winter had some unseasonably warm weather with short spells of large amounts of rain, the overall quality of the spring Florida crop is good,” Towell said.

Success, she noted, comes from innovation in packaging and correct package size for each shopper category. 

“This helps eliminate product waste among consumers,” Towell said. “Another form of success comes from finding solutions to sustainability efforts. Currently, Duda Farm Fresh Foods offers fully recyclable, fiberboard trays for the tray pack corn.”

With the current state of the industry as well as the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the challenge everyone is facing is trying to figure out the “new normal” supply chain.

“From retail level to grower level, we’ve all experienced the extremes at both ends of the spectrum as demand fluctuates with everything going on,” Towell said. “We all must identify this ‘new normal’ and find ways to work through it together as an industry.”

That’s particularly important at the retail level and Towell would like to see stores do a bigger push for the Florida spring vegetables.

“In-store displays as well as cross promotion during holidays can help increase sales at the retail level,” she said. “For example, as warmer weather approaches and more people are going to be outside, pair the Tray Pack Sweet Corn with essential grilling items such as butter and seasoning.”
