Great attendance for NEPC's annual golf tournament

ng1KINGSTON, MA — More than 130 golfers participated in the New England Produce Council's 23rd annual golf tournament, held Tuesday, July 23, at the Indian Pond Country Club.

Indian Pond, located here in Kingston, MA, is about 37 miles south of Boston, and was a new venue for this event. Also new this year: a later start time and a buffet dinner following the competition.

Very heavy rains the night before the tournament — and which continued through the morning of the tournament — threatened to end the event before it got started, but the rain stopped by around noon, and the golfers teed off at 1 p.m., just one hour later than originally scheduled. Although with the heavy rains, it was cart-path only.

"We were thrilled with the attendance at this year's event, and the feedback has been positive," NEPC Executive Director Laura Sullivan told The Produce News Wednesday, July 24. "The day started out with an hour rain delay, but that did not dampen our great time. Once the rain subsided, the golfers hit the course, and a great time was had by all. The day ended with a buffet dinner, comments from our board president, Anthony Sattler, and an exciting raffle."

The winning team consisted of Ed Swartz of Nasoya Foods, Tom Murray of Roche Bros. and Bill Nolan of JOH. The second-place team consisted of Ken Reagan and Kevin Keough, both of State Garden/Olivia's Organics, and Scott Maher and Bill Gordon, both of Roche Bros. The third-place team consisted of Shawn Bates of Shawn Bates Foundation, Chris Pungitore of Star Market, Brian Gibbons of Highland Park Markets and Bo Lynch of Shapiro Produce.

As in previous years, money raised from the NEPC golf tournament will benefit the council's Scholarship Fund, with scholarships awarded to relatives of NEPC members.
