Fresh from the Start Maine broccoli continuing strong

Although summer may be winding down, Fresh from the Start’s Maine broccoli crop is in full swing. Packing both crowns and bunches, the company anticipates shipping will continue into October.

Fresh from the Start plants more than eight varieties -- depending on the time of harvest -- across 2,800 acres. “Warm days and cool nights make Maine an ideal spot for growing broccoli,” said Lauren Keenan, category manager at Fresh from the Start.

The company ships both crown cuts (40-45 count per case) and bunches (14 count and 18 count).

As the grower, it controls all inputs of the crop, starting from seed selection to harvesting with its own crews to post-harvest trucking to customers. Fresh from the Start also has USDA inspection on each load at the farm level before shipping.

“This involvement results in the highest quality product for our customers. When you buy from us, you are buying directly from the grower," said Keenan. Plus, for East Coast customers its crops are days fresher than West Coast broccoli since it can deliver to most major East Coast markets within 24 hours.

In addition to broccoli, Fresh from the Start offers a seasonal cauliflower program, which will run through mid-October, and it offers a wide variety of fruits and vegetables on a year-round basis.
