Autumn offers organic fruit opportunities

Apples are always a great organic option for retail promotions especially as the new crop is harvested. There are also some other choices coming into play this fall including grapes, pomegranates, persimmons and Asian pears.

Sunview Marketing International, based in Delano, CA, is one firm that will have a healthy lineup of organic grapes this fall. That lineup includes a handful of red seedless grape varieties including Rosa, Magenta, Timco, Allison, Scarlet Royal and Crimson red seedless. On the green side of the seedless category, the firm will feature Stella Bella, Great Green and Autumn King starting in October. It will also have some of its own proprietary Sweet Carnival grapes as an organic option. Mitch Wetzel, vice president of sales, said that it should have good volume of organics throughout the fall months with potential for promotions on several different varieties.

flavor-fall-and-asian-pears Grapes, pomegranates, persimmons and Asian pears are on tap for the fall season. Stephen Paul of Homegrown Organic Farms, based in Porterville, CA, agreed that there could be promotional opportunities on a handful of organic grapes this fall. He said Timson, Great Greens and Kelly might offer the best opportunity for ad pricing. He added the firm’s August production of the Ivory grape variety is outstanding with the fruit presenting very well.

Paul also noted that the company would have solid supplies of organic persimmons, pomegranates, Asian pears and blueberries over the next several months. Of that group, he said organic blueberries from Oregon, which are in the latter stages of their harvest, would still be available until mid- September. He said it has been a “really good year” for organic blueberries as the crop has been plentiful and of excellent quality.

Homegrown’s organic Asian pear deal was to begin harvest on August 13 with supplies lasting into December. The company has decent volume but he said challenges on the growing end would probably lead to higher f.o.b. prices this fall.

Organic pomegranates from Homegrown will start in mid-September followed by its organic fuyu persimmon production by mid-October. Paul said there could be some promotional opportunities available on pomegranates, as it appears to be a nice-sized crop, volume-wise.

Sunview also has organic deals in both persimmons and pomegranates. In fact, all of its production in those two commodities falls in the organic category. Wetzel said both of those items would begin shipping during the first week of October.

“We will have good supplies and promotable volumes through the first of December,” he said. “For persimmons, we grow and pack both Fuyu and Hachiya varieties and for pomegranates we grow and pack the Wonderful variety. Weather has been great for both of these fruits. We anticipate excellent quality fruit this season with good volume.”
