Jewel-Osco President Doug Cygan dies at 55

Doug Cygan, who began his career with Jewel-Osco more than three decades ago as a part-time clerk and last year was named president of the Jewel-Osco division of New Albertsons Inc., died after a brief illness July 5. He was 55. cygan

Mr. Cygan took on the role of Jewel-Osco's president in 2017. Prior to that he was vice president of marketing and merchandising for all 187 Jewel-Osco locations in the Chicagoland area. In that role Mr. Cygan supervised all aspects of marketing, merchandising, promotion and sales strategies. In his time at the company he served in a variety of operational roles and marketing/merchandising positions, including vice president of fresh merchandising.

“Doug was a popular president, a strong leader within the company and in the community," said Mary Frances Trucco, communications manager for Jewel-Osco. "Everyone at Jewel-Osco is devastated by his passing.”

Mr. Cygan earned a bachelor’s degree in food distribution from Western Michigan University. He served on the boards of Northern Illinois Food Bank, Greater Chicago Food Depository, Western Michigan University and NorthPointe Resources, a private, not-for-profit provider of developmental disability and behavioral health services in the Zion area.
