Hundreds of watermelon growers, shippers and industry affiliates took over the Westin La Cantera Resort in San Antonio, TX, Feb. 20-24 for the National Watermelon Association’s Centennial Celebration and annual convention.
Amber Nolin of Enterprise, AL, the 2012 Alabama Watermelon Queen, was named 2013 National Watermelon Queen and will spend the next year representing the association at promotional events around the world. She is seen here with Cheryl Hicks, a representative from packaging powerhouse RockTenn of Norcross, GA (which donated innumerable items to the convention’s annual auction that funds the activities of the NWA and its marketing arm, the National Watermelon Promotion Board) as John Lapide of Melon 1 in Brooklyn, NY makes a bid in the background.
First runner-up was Texas Watermelon Queen Kimberly Duda, and second runner-up was Terra Tatman, representing the Maryland-Delaware NWA chapter.
Other highlights of the convention included sessions with the FDA’s Michelle Smith and Washington, DC, lobbyist Craig Reggelbrugge of the Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform, a performance by multi-platinum country music artists Little Texas and a smashing appearance by legendary comedian Gallagher.
