As part of its initiative to raise awareness among college students of the benefits of eating healthful, fresh and fresh-cut produce, Del Monte Fresh will provide its first Beach Bash Dash competition during Spring Break from 12-4 p.m. March 6-8 and March 11-13 in front of the Plaza Resort & Spa in Daytona Beach, FL.
The campaign comes in the wake of research — including an Oregon State University study — that reveals that college students are not even eating one serving a day of fruits and vegetables, significantly less than the five daily servings that are recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines. In addition to giveaways at an obstacle course, Del Monte Fresh produce – bananas and fresh-cut pineapples – will be given away throughout the six-day period at multiple hotels along the beach.
“We’re excited to bring healthy, fun activities to Spring Break 2013 and expect our ‘Beach Bash Dash’ will become a real focal point, engaging spring breakers and onlookers while promoting our message that fruits and vegetables are critical for good health,” Dennis Christou, vice president of marketing with Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., said in a press release.
During the festivities, Del Monte Fresh will give 200 banana costumes to spring breakers who will participate in a massive Banana Dance on the beach, which will take place at 3:30 p.m. March 7 at the Plaza Ocean Club in Daytona Beach.
At the Beach Bash Dash, college students from around the world will go head-to-head as they race to complete a series of one-of-a-kind challenges on the beach in an obstacle course designed in the Del Monte spirit of combining health with fun. The names of the obstacles say it all: Plank Walk, Fruit Loops, Sand Crawl, Fruit Toss, Puzzle Dig and Pit Fall. Race times will be kept only for bragging rights.
Leading up to Beach Bash Dash, Del Monte Fresh provided a sweepstakes to promote the competition among spring breakers. The winner received free airfare to and from Daytona Beach for herself and two friends, a five-night hotel stay, and other prizes. Updates will be available at the Del Monte Fresh Facebook page.
