USA Onions’ retail display contest underway

USA Onions/Weber grill products “Get Grillin’“ football bowl season retail display contest kicked off Dec. 15, and produce managers across the country have received their custom logo-emblazoned black Weber Kettle grills as well as plenty of Spanish Sweets from the Idaho-Eastern Oregon onion-growing region.

Sherise Jones, marketing director for the Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Committee, said that pairing Spanish Sweets with football parties was a perfect fit.

“The homegating and tailgating theme was really a natural choice for the promotions,” Ms. Jones said, adding that USA Onions are perfect for grilling, whether on the backyard barbecue or in a stadium parking lot.

She said that retailers are encouraged to use the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl as their themes to create displays, which must be in place for at least one week before Feb. 3. Displays must also be located in produce departments and must include Idaho-Eastern Oregon onions bagged, bulk or both that clearly show the IEO name.

Photos of the entries must be submitted by Feb. 28 to qualify for a Weber’s Time to Grill cookbook as well as a chance to win Kettles and bigger Weber grills, and the grand prize — a Summit S-470 gas grill and $1,000 cash. The grand prize package includes a rotisserie with infrared burner, smoker box and sear station.

Other prizes are the Genesis gas grill, the Performer Platinum charcoal with gas ignition, the Smokey Joe Gold portable charcoal grill and kabob sets and accessories. Winners will be announced by March 31.

Point-of-sale materials provided at no cost to retailers consist of recipe cards, “All-American Winners” posters, sweepstakes tear-off sheets, Weber/USA Onions grill posters and USA Onion merchandising tips. The use of QR codes that direct consumers to the USAOnions website are also encouraged.
