Bozzuto's makes $100,000 donation for victims of Hurricane Sandy

Bozzuto's Inc. has made a $100,000 donation, with the intent of helping its family-owned and operated retailers provide assistance to their local communities devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

The money will be used to purchase gift cards from IGA Supermarkets, Belmont Market, Big Y, Dave's Marketplace, and King Kullen in an effort to get hurricane victims much-needed food, medicine and supplies. The gift cards will be distributed by local food banks in Connecticut, Long Island and Rhode Island.

"Everyone has felt the immediate impact of this destructive storm," Michael Bozzuto, president and chief executive officer of Bozzuto’s, said in a Nov. 12 statement. "Our resolve to support these family-owned and operated retailers is unwavering. They are the backbone of the communities they serve. It is our moral obligation to assist them with getting their businesses and customers back on their feet."

Hurricane Sandy was dubbed "the superstorm," bringing with it major flooding, travel disruption, structural damage and power outages in many parts of the Northeast. The storm was nearly 1,000 miles wide at times and claimed more than 100 lives.

Established in 1945, Bozzuto's Inc., based here, is a family-owned, leading total-service wholesale distributor of food and household products to family-owned and operated retailers in the New England area.
