Martin’s Super Market reopens after store shooting

A Martin’s Super Market in Elkhart, IN, reopened today at noon, less than two days after a shooting in the store took the lives of three people: Krystle Dikes, a store employee; Rachelle Godfread, a customer; and the gunman.

“The entire Martin’s family is saddened by this tragedy,” Rob Bartels, Martin’s president and chief executive officer, said in a release. “We will be offering counseling services to employees … for as long as necessary. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved and the entire community. Additionally, we would like to thank everyone in the community for all your thoughts and prayers.

“We know that the quick response from Elkhart Police saved lives, and for that we will be forever grateful,” he said. “We appreciate the professional way in which both the Elkhart and Indiana State Police have handled the situation.”

In response to support on its Facebook page, Bartels added the following comments:

“I thank God for his grace and love demonstrated by an enormous outpouring of support; for the heroic actions of the Elkhart police officers – they answered fatal danger with heroic character and resolve; for our capable and dedicated civil servants, who have worked so graciously and earnestly; for our brothers and sisters in organizations across our community and our country, who have dropped everything to answer need; for our Martin’s family — on both sides of the register — who have poured warmth and love into deep hurt.

“Our customers, employees and friends are leaning on each other and finding strength. And I thank God for our store team Wednesday night, who used skill and judgment in the moment of crisis. And for our response team members who have answered with their whole hearts and tireless effort to meet the needs of our team and customers.

“In our 67-year history we have not faced this kind of challenge. We will do so earnestly and vigorously. We will face our losses together and we will find answers over time. We will work carefully, prudently and thoroughly as we go forward.

“Our prayers and sympathy are with all who are affected by this tragedy. We have great confidence in law enforcement and will rely on them for details."

Martin’s Super Markets was founded in 1947 and currently has 21 stores in South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart, Goshen, Plymouth, Nappanee, Logansport and Warsaw, IN, and Niles, Stevensville and St. Joseph, MI.
