Color trends: 2019 Holiday and what’s new for 2020

Each year, color giants like Behr and Sherwin-Williams release their top picks. From powerful aqua to soft terracotta, 2019 is all about bringing pops of color into your favorite designs with jewel-toned accents.

ColorTrends Expect the 2019 holiday season to lean towards nature with grainy, frosty and bark-like textures. Envision design elements such as candleholders, coniferous wreaths, twigs, and hanging decorations in the shape of animals and fir cones. Key color schemes venture far beyond the traditional red and green with this trend towards natural themes blue and green are surfacing as dominant colors on holiday decor.

Dark Greens

Dark greens are inspired by the restorative power of nature, which is more important in society now more than ever. Embracing dark greens is all about creating a bold look. Pair it with darker neutrals like black and brown, or incorporate with jewel tones. Use warm metals like copper or gold to create a sense of contrast.

Medium Blues

Medium blue shades come to us from Behr, who named a hue called “Blueprint” their 2019 Color of the Year. “Blueprint” — and shades like it — are incredibly versatile. A medium blue can be used like a neutral shade, or it can stand up to bolder colors like vibrant reds and yellows. Alternatively, it can be the accent color- the pop of visual interest that livens up an otherwise neutral design.

Purple

Ultra Violet was named Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year, and purple is expected to prevail in 2019 as well. Muted, understated versions of the color still have that energy, but with a mellowed intensity that makes the shade more versatile.

Christmas 2019 embraces color palettes inspired by the ocean, precious stones and minerals. Dark greens, dark and light blue shades, warm golds, bronze, and metallic tones. The result brings a touch of whimsy and glamour to the festive scenes you, and your customers can create. Behr just released its 2020 Color Trends palette, comprised of 15 unique shades of paint they predict will be embraced by design enthusiasts next year. The 15 colors are broken down into three stories, dubbed Worldhood, Restore, and Atmospheric. Each story has its color scheme informed by Behr’s global color trend research. According to the findings, the year 2020 will be defined by soothing tones from oranges and pinks to blues and greens in both warm and cool hues.
