CosMic Plants’ orchid decorates meeting between Prince Harry and FLOTUS

Great Britain’s Prince Harry met with U.S. First Lady Melania Trump during the Invictus Games, which were held in Toronto, Sept. 23-30, and for CosMic Plants in Beamsville, Ontario, Canada, the meeting was a very special one, according to a news release.

“We were honored to see our orchid as floral décor at the meeting,” said Mike van Steekelenburg, co-owner at CosMic Plants. “The elegant white infinity orchid is a perfect fit.”

Steekenlenburg told The Produce News he was totally unaware beforehand that his company’s orchids would be used during the games until someone else pointed it out to him.

COSMIC-ORCHIDA CosMic Plants’ Infinity orchid decorated the meeting between U.S. First Lady Melania Trump and Great Britain’s Prince Harry during the Invictus Games Sept. 23-30 in Toronto, Canada.“One of my customers asked me if I saw my orchid on TV and he sent me a link to some footage,” Steekenlenburg said. “I recognized the ceramic pot and we are the only ones providing this variety in this circle — that orchid was 100 percent ours. I was so excited. I’m proud that the quality we work so hard to obtain was recognized by the designers and event planners that chose it. One of them must have thought that for this particular event, ‘I’m going to use this plant from CosMic Plants.’”

CosMic Plants’ main market is the greater Toronto area and the company supplies many quality florists, event planners and designers.

“I’d like to say that we supply the sophisticated floral retail industry,” said Steekenlenburg. “Our highest quality items go to specialty florists, event planners, interiorscapers and the higher-end chain stores. We grow our orchids longer, which means they are a little beefier and that leads to stronger root systems, more volume in terms of blooms and spikes, and longer shelf life. It takes longer and thus a higher cost price. I tell our customers that if you’re looking for the cheapest orchid, then maybe we are not the right match.”

The Invictus Games are para-Olympic-style games for injured, ill and wounded servicemen and women and veterans, which were started by Prince Harry in 2014 in order to build global awareness for those injured in combat.

“In just two short years, the Invictus Games have allowed thousands of injured and wounded servicemen and women from many different countries to participate in adaptive sports competitions — something that should be lauded and supported worldwide. I am honored by the opportunity to represent our country at this year’s games,” First Lady Melania Trump said in a statement about the trip.

The Toronto games were hosted during the same year that Canada is also celebrating the 150th anniversary of its Confederation.
