Rene van Rems of Carlsbad, CA, a noted award-winning floral designer, lecturer and author, was selected as one of three judges for floats in the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, CA. The 2014 parade on Jan. 1 marked the 125th anniversary of the Tournament of Roses parade.
Tournament officials announced the selection in late November. The other two judges for the floats in the parade were Cheryl Ceccheto, the head of Sequoia Productions in Los Angeles, and James Folsom, a director at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in Pasadena, CA.
Van Rems and his fellow judges assessed creative design, floral craftsmanship and other factors of 46 floral masterpieces entered in the parade. They presented 24 awards in a variety of categories.
Van Rems is a contributor to Floral Marketing in The Produce News. Born in Amsterdam, van Rems studied at the Floral Institute in Holland prior to moving to the United States.
He is a member of the American Institute of Floral Design and the National Speakers Association and served as director of promotions for the California Cut Flower Commission for 10 years, conducting stage programs across the nation for California’s flower industry.
Van Rems has been featured on ABC, NBC and Home & Garden Television, showcasing European influences on trends in American floral design. He was also the recipient and honoree of the Los Angeles Flower Market’s first Rene van Rems Award for excellence in design education.
Van Rems has published two books: Rene’s Bouquets — A Guide to Euro-Style Hand-Tied Bouquets (2008) and Rene’s Bouquets for Brides (2011).
