D’Arrigo Bros. always welcomes the New York produce season

A strong advocate for locally grown produce, D’Arrigo Bros. Co., located on the Hunts Point Terminal Market in the Bronx, NY, looks forward to another New York produce season.

The multi-generational family-owned company has its roots in local produce. It has served the New York metropolitan area for over 50 years and delivers everything the fresh fruit and vegetable industry has to offer with its fleet of more than 50 trucks.

Gabriela D’Arrigo, marketing and communications director and organic buyer, said the company has always supported local growers and has worked with the local growing community since its inception.

These producers give us the exclusivity of their product and we produce signage on them here in the Bronx. We also highlight the growers through our digital platforms.”

In addition to supporting local growers, D’Arrigo Bros. has a tropical fruit and vegetable program and it handles Eastern, Western and Texas vegetables and fruits. The company also handles berries, tomatoes, melons, potatoes, onions and much more, including a wide range of imported items.

The company also recently expanded outside of the market and is now fully immersed in the both the conventional and organic banana business.

“Although what we have on offer from local growers is always dependent on the weather, they typically start moving their produce in April and run through the middle of fall,” explained D’Arrigo. “We source everything that the Tri-State local growing season has to offer.”

Facility renovations and improvements are always ongoing at the company’s 75,000-square-foot facility in the Hunts Point market. The company now has its GMP certification, and its goal is to maintain and improve it going forward.

“At this point we are well rehearsed in dealing with program changes from region to region,” explained D’Arrigo. “We source product from all over the world on a regular basis in order to have as many items as we can for as close to year-round as possible.”

The company’s extensive customer base includes all types and levels of retailers and foodservice operations, including restaurants, country clubs, school systems, steamship lines, airlines, commissaries, sidewalk stands and smaller produce wholesalers.

“Local growers are always trying to extend their growing season, especially when the crop is good and the markets strong,” said D’Arrigo. “We support the growers that we have worked with from day one, and we do the best we can to help them grow their business. It’s all about having an organic and authentic relationship.”
