FreshPro Food Distributors growing its line in numerous directions

Touted as the one-stop shop for all your perishable food needs, West Caldwell, NJ-based FreshPro Food Distributors covers nearly the entire refrigerated and fresh cut sections. Its emphasis is on bulk packs for kitchen/salad bars, retail packs for supermarkets or convenience stores, private label or under its own FreshPro brand.

Since 1985 the company has supplied the food industry with a wide variety of high-quality conventional and organic produce, fresh-cuts, deli items, cheese, chilled foods, floral and other products related to the perishable food arena.

P1060026FreshPro Food Distributor’s sales managers: Jose Troya, Crisbel Curiel, and Ruben Mercedes.“In 1991, our fresh-cut division, FreshPro, was created to fill an opportunity in the market for fresh-cut,” said Joe Granata, director of produce sales. “Since then the FreshPro division has expanded far beyond fresh-cut product, and now includes private label, repacking and other services.”

In addition to fresh produce and floral, the company has expanded into the beverage category.

“Our line includes Natalie’s Fresh Squeezed lemonades, teas and juices,” said Granata. “Other additions to our line include the Giorgio Fresh line of dried mushrooms, Fresh Express Salad Kits and Sauté Kits, and Ark Foods Shishito peppers and assorted hot peppers.”

In late April and into May, the company was promoting its line of apples and pears from both New Zealand and South America.

“We have introduced a new apple called the Breeze from New Zealand,” said Granata.

The Breeze is the earliest apple to be harvested in New Zealand. It is touted as being red, sweet, aromatic and very crisp.

Food safety is at the top of the attention list at FreshPro. Granata said the company is in compliance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Food Safety and Modernization Act.

“We have updated our FSMA and we have hazard analysis and preventive controls programs in place,” stressed Granata.

“Our facility has a HACCP certified employee and a trained Preventive Controls Qualified Individual on staff to oversee the development, implementation and continual improvement of a FSMA Food Safety Plan. In addition, our facility is inspected by an accredited Third-Party Auditing body, and it operates in compliance with the requirements of The Bioterrorism Act of 2002.”

FreshPro is highly bullish of locally grown programs.

“We are a huge proponent of the Jersey Fresh program, as well as the New York State Grown & Certified program,” said Granata.
