Italian chestnuts roasting at an open A.J. Trucco booth

There are many legendary produce companies located at the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market in the Bronx, NY. A.J. Trucco is high on the list. The company’s history dates back to 1937 when it was among the stands at Washington Street Produce Market in downtown Manhattan. It was one of the pioneers that relocated to the Hunts Point market when it opened in 1965. Today it is the largest importer of fresh produce, dried fruits and nuts and more from around the world. Trucco-webNick Pacia, president, and Sasha LoPresti, director of business development for A.J. Trucco.

Nick Pacia, company president, said Trucco, which is how it’s commonly referred to, said the New York Produce Show is special for the company.

“In addition to being held in our hometown, this show enables us to see our customers and to meet new ones,” said Pacia. “This show has always been a success that has led to new business.”

Trucco will be featuring its popular TruStar Italian Organic Ready-to-Eat Chestnuts at the event. “This is an item that has been growing in popularity for us over the last few years,” Pacia said. “We are excited to continue to promote it at the show along with our fresh Italian chestnuts, which we always have roasted for attendees at the show.”

Fresh Italian Chestnuts were the staple of the company for decades. When Pacia joined the company in 1999 he began an expansion that included a variety of products such as kiwifruit, garlic, fresh figs and citrus as well as continuing to offer the traditional items like dried fruits and nuts.

Trucco is also at the forefront of the kiwi market in that it pioneers innovation, distribution and local farming. It continues to strongly promote its popular KiwiStar brand kiwi, which now has its own designated website,, to help increase consumption.

“In addition to our chestnut line and KiwiStar Kiwifruit, we’ll be featuring our dried fruits and nuts, which are a perfectly matched tradition with the holidays,” said Pacia.

The company is also expanding its space at the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market. “We recently doubled the size of our space at the market,” said Pacia. “This is an exciting expansion for Trucco. It will allow us to better serve our customers and offer an expanded list of items which will complement our current offerings.”

In addition to KiwiStar and TruStar, Trucco also markets products under the Fresco and Naturi brand names.

“We are geared up and ready for another great New York Produce Show, and we invite all visitors to the event to stop by booth 413 for a visit,” said Pacia.
