US Fresh introducing a new line of 100-percent natural and organic pulps

Since its start in 2004, Bronx, NY-based US Fresh has evolved into a leading grower, importer and shipper of high-quality herbs, tropicals and ethnic root vegetables, and it has now added a new line of 100-percent natural and organic pulps.

Food Safety Manager Silvana Irikura told The Produce News that the pulps have no added sugars.

“We carry a variety of flavors, such as soursop, mango, guava and passion fruit, and we will be expanding the line with additional flavors in the coming months,” she said.

“We are known for customizing packaging for fresh herbs, but we also offer packaging solutions for other products including turmeric, jalapeno peppers, jicamas and others.”

Irikura is herself an indication of how fast and strong the company is growing. She joined US Fresh in October 2015, following a 10-year career as a marketing executive in the food industry. She holds a master’s degree in marketing.

She explained, “I was hired by US Fresh as the food safety manager, with the guarantee that the company would support me throughout all of the necessary training, which they have done. I am now an industrial engineer with HACCP certification, and I am a preventive control qualified individual, which is commonly referred to as PCQI. I was certified by both organizations about two years ago.”

US Fresh has been PrimusGFS certified for two consecutive years, and with a stunning score of 100/100 right from the beginning.

 

“We are not only proud of these results, but equally proud of everyone involved in the process,” said Irikura. “We are continuously improving our food-safety management program, keeping an eye on new regulations like the new FSMA, and making sure all our operations follow our strict food-safety guidelines.”

FSMA is the Food and Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act, the most sweeping reform of the nation’s food-safety laws in more than 70 years, which was signed into law by President Obama on Jan. 4, 2011. The act aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it.

“We are currently working very hard to achieve an SQF certification this year,” Irikura pointed out.

“And we are expecting a perfect score, just like with our primusGFS. This certification requires a more meticulous food-safety management system, and it will help us ensure the highest level of excellence, with regulatory and scientifically proven standards, in the preparation, processing and handling of our products.

“With this new addition, we want to reinforce our commitment to food safety and to providing high-quality safe products to our customers,” she continued. “We train our employees continuously, and new employees are trained immediately when they are hired.”

In addition to overseeing the company’s food-safety initiatives, Irikura joins her colleagues and superiors in focusing on customer service and providing its customers with an even greater standard of excellence.

US Fresh works with closely with companies on the Hunts Point Market.

“The Hunts Point Market has made substantial improvements in recent years, and we are looking forward to future improvements,” Irikura noted.
