Kingsville, Ontario-based Red Sun Farms is a leading greenhouse vegetable grower and shipper with greenhouse operations in Canada, the United States and in Mexico, enabling the company to provide a nonstop year-round flow of high-quality conventional and organic vegetables to its customers.
“In January of this year, our newest greenhouse, in Wapakoneta OH, introduced its first set of plants — more than 200,000 seedlings across 20-acres of greenhouse space,” said Jim DiMenna, company president and chief executive officer. “In addition, this location is the site of a 26,000-square-foot distribution center we are now finalizing.”
The first harvest in Wapakoneta is scheduled for March.
Red Sun Farms is currently producing cucumbers, eggplants, peppers and a variety of tomatoes, including organic tomatoes, in Canada. In Mexico, the company is focusing on cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, as well as some organics.
“Our U.S.-based locations will be growing a variety of tomatoes including grapes, beef steak and cocktails,” added DiMenna.
The company has undergone tremendous growth in recent years, including the opening and expansions at its Pharr, TX, and Dublin, VA, facilities. DiMenna explained that while the company is always considering the opportunity for future growth, there are no firm commitments to additional U.S. locations at this time.
“But the Red Sun Farms team continues to grow as we invest in sales and marketing, human resources, quality and operations,” DiMenna said.
“To be the best in service, price and fill rates is still not enough for us,” he added. “Our customers are seeking more from us, and our goal is to have the best in taste and flavor. We continue to strive to maintain this recognition.”
Red Sun Farms is always exploring new ideas in terms of what it can grow and market, which DiMenna said continues to set the company apart from its competitors.
“And it has established us as market leaders in innovation and creativity,” he noted. “These new concepts are in the trial stages, and once they meet our strict approvals on taste, appearance and feasibility we will announce them to the produce community.”
“Being totally integrated from seed selection, through propagation and planting in our own high-tech greenhouses, we stand alone in being able to continually reach these goals,” added DiMenna.
