The Roman god Janus, for whom January is named, had two faces, one looking back, one looking forward. And that’s what we do in this January issue — look back and look ahead.
We feature reviews of the year and predictions for 2013 by guest columnists from key sectors of the floral industry, and from key floral associations. Our overview column is again by industry veteran Tom Lavagetto.
Highlights for us in 2012 were the trade shows: the Tropical Plant Industry Exhibition, the International Floriculture Expo, the Fresh Produce & Floral Council’s Southern California Expo, the Wholesale Florist & Florist Supplier Association’s Floral Distribution Conference, and FlorEcuador in Quito, Ecuador. Visits to growers and suppliers in California, Florida, Virginia and Wisconsin were also key.
Looking ahead in Floral Marketing in The Produce News, we will be covering TPIE, the World Floral Expo, IFE, Proflora in Colombia, the Produce Marketing Association’s Fresh Summit and the WF&FSA conference in 2013. As the taxicab driver said, “It’s not the job I like, it’s the people you run into.” The people in this industry make this job enjoyable and always a learning experience.
Our peerless prognosticators in this issue reflect a generally positive tone on the economy. They see the floral industry continuing to recover (one says we have already climbed back from the fiscal cliff). And that’s a happy note to sound as we start a new year. See you next month.
